Works by Renowned Artist Yayoi Kusama at Art Santa Fe 2017
In just two weeks, Art Santa Fe 2017 will open, delighting the thousands of art lovers in attendance with contemporary artworks from top galleries and studio artists around the world. One of this year’s exhibitors, Gallery Edel from Osaka, Japan, will be including work from internationally renowned artist Yayoi Kusama in its exhibition.
Born in 1929 in Matsumoto City, Japan, Kusama moved to New York shortly before turning 30 and established herself in the avant-garde art scene there. After struggling with mental health issues in the 1970s, Kusama slipped into obscurity, only to re-emerge in 1993, when she represented Japan in the Venice Biennale. Throughout her career, Kusama has worked in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, film, and installation, producing a body of work unified in its use of repetitive, densely patterned motifs.
Art critic and journalist Brian Boucher of artnet news writes: “The year 2014 ‘belonged to’ Kusama in terms of global exhibition attendance, according to the Art Newspaper’s museum attendance report, which had her retrospective ‘Infinite Obsession’ bringing in more than 2 million visitors in South and Central America. The polka dot- and mirror-obsessed artist’s engrossing installations dominate social media wherever they travel, with people wildly posting and liking photos of the easy-to-love immersive works.”
Fans of Kusama are in for a treat this year and next, as an exhibition of Kusama’s work from over seven decades travels across North America. “Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors,” which focuses on the evolution of Kusama’s immersive mirror installations, opened at the Smithsonian Institute’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., this past February. Just today, the hot-ticket show opened at the Seattle Art Museum, where it will stay until Sept. 10, 2017. The exhibition then moves to The Broad in Los Angeles from Oct. 21, 2017, to Jan. 10, 2018; the Art Gallery of Ontario from March 3 to May 27, 2018; and the Cleveland Museum of Art from July 9 to Sept. 30, 2018.
At Art Santa Fe this July 13–16, showgoers will be able to enjoy some of Kusama’s works in Gallery Edel’s Booth 105. We hope you can make it there to see selected pieces from this internationally acclaimed artist as well as stunning work from hundreds of others. Click here to get your tickets to Art Santa Fe.
